On the Cover: Early Flowering of Transgenic Potato Plants with Reduced Expression of the Sucrose Transporter StSUT4
Transgenic potato (Solanum tuberosum) plants of the strict photoperiodic subsp. andigena with reduced expression of the Suc transporter StSUT4 develop an early-flowering phenotype and produce tubers even under noninductive long-day conditions. Early flowering and tuberization are accompanied by loss of shade avoidance response and insensitivity toward far-red-enriched light, suggesting that StSUT4 might be involved in the transmission of a photoreceptor-mediated signal further downstream. See Chincinska et al. (pp. 515–528).
