On the Cover: Transgenics that overexpress Knotted1-like (knox) homeobox genes in different plant species have altered leaf shape and development. On the cover, in the background, are lettuce wild-type plants together with transgenics that overexpress KNAT1, an Arabidopsis knox gene. The leaves in the black box show the different degree of alteration observed in the transgenics versus wild type (at the bottom). At the top is a severely altered leaf that displays secondary and tertiary leaflets rising from the margins in a reiterative process of leaf morphogenesis. Isopentenyladenine-type cytokinin accumulation is proposed to mediate KNAT1 effect on leaf cell fate. (Images by Luigi Santini, digital elaboration by Giovanna Frugis.)
