On the Cover: Genome sequencing has revealed that many genes are likely to be redundant, and that therefore simple knockouts will not sufficient to uncover their function. A complement to the conventional mutant screen, which mostly lead to the isolation of loss-of-function mutants, are screens for dominant gain-of-function mutants. One such gain-of-function technique is activation tagging, using enhancers from the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter (CAMV 35Se). Weigel et al. (pp. 1003-1013) have generated several collections of plants transformed with activation-tagging vectors, and have begun to characterize several mutants from these collections.
