On the Cover: The shade-avoidance response in plants is characterized by enhanced shoot elongation and early flowering. A constitutive shade-avoidance phenotype can be observed in the sorghum mutant 58M, which possesses a null mutant PHYB gene (left). This phenotype can be reproduced in the wild-type plant by growing under dim, far-red light (right). Finlayson et al. (pp. 17-25) report that the lack of functional PhyB results in overexpression of a circadian ethylene rhythm, an effect that can be nearly duplicated in the wild-type plant with dim, far-red enriched light (insets).
