We have developed procedures for detection and characterization of UDP-glucose: glucosyltransferases following electrophoretic separation in nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels. Using digitonin-solubilized membrane protein preparations from a variety of plants and two cellulose-producing bacteria, activity can be demonstrated for several UDP-glucose:
